Reading Develops Critical Thinking Skills

The process of reading develops a person’s ability to think and assess ideas and to come to rational conclusions concerning those ideas.  Being able to comprehend what you are reading opens a myriad of new ideas to your mind.  Reading can teach comparison and contrasting of ideas; the difference between fact and opinion; evaluation of ideas—whether they are true or false; new vocabulary; making inferences and perhaps being persuaded of new concepts that change your life.

Maya Angelou in her poem “I Love the Look of Words” captures it brilliantly:

I love the book and the look of words

The weight of ideas that popped into my mind.

I love the tracks

Of new thinking in my mind.
